POLKI Hidden Power Exhibition
Exhibition “POLKI Hidden Power” takes a closer look at Polish women – Polki, and seek out the traces of their feminine, hidden power in their work and art. For centuries women were in a subordinate position in terms of their rights, voice, independence, their social and familial status. They had limited choices, save for to muster up the strength to carry on in order to fulfill the expectations of society. The exhibition presents both the work of Polish illustrators as well as designers, particularly ceramists, that either allude to the subject of womanhood or to the art and objects that embody its strength as great pieces of feminine art. It shows the work of both recognized and emerging Polish female artists: Basia Grzybowska Flores, Maria Jeglińska, Izabela Kaczmarek – Szurek, Malwina Konopacka, Kaja Kusztra, Aleksandra Morawiak, Magdalena Pankiewicz, Sabina Samulska, and Ewelina Skowrońska.
“Polki – Hidden Power” is curated by Monika Brauntsch, and is the result of a collaboration with the artist Ewelina Skowrońska and Carol Flueckiger, Associate Professor, School of Art, Texas Tech University.
About the Organization
The Spirit of Poland Foundation is an initiative led by a group connected with the design scene in Poland; it aims to promote Polish culture and design at the international forum. This is done through industry events, exhibitions at museums and cultural institutions, as well as collaboration with universities. An important part of the team’s work is networking, searching for new links and contacts, supporting relations, and cultural exchange. The foundation specifically focuses on the areas, where design it is not sufficiently noticed. An example of such activity is the “Peconheiros” project, run in the Amazon. As a result, it reaches new, diverse groups of recipients. The aim of these activities is to increase the demand for design services, as well as to build a networking network.
The Spirit of Poland’s exhibitions have been presented at such events as Tokyo Designers Week, imm Cologne and 100% Design London. Since 2013 the initiative has focused on Brazil, where theexhibitions, co-organized in cooperation with Culture.pl have been presented, amongst others, at MAM Rio de Janeiro, National Museum and Oscar Niemeyer Museum.
